DPS is responsible for the maintenance of approximately 53 miles of city streets. This includes pot hole patching, street cleaning, and signage. DPS also handles snow removal on all City streets as well as 4 miles of state highways located in town.
During snowfall, DPS is responsible for snow removal from city streets, City-owned parking lots, downtown sidewalks, and Kirsch Municipal Airport. DPS staff, with the assistance of the police department, monitor weather conditions and respond accordingly. To learn more about snow removal policy and snow removal emergencies, visit the “Snow Removal” link below.
If you would like to inquire about traffic control devices, such as traffic signals, regulatory signs (stop, yield, speed, parking, etc.), warning signs and pavement markings, the City Engineer assists the Public Safety Director with these issues. Please contact the Engineer’s office at (269) 659-7249.
The City provides several services for citizens to address yard waste such as brush, leaves, and compost. Brush pickup in the City of Sturgis is held three times per year, during the first week of April, May, and October. Brush will also be picked up throughout the spring and summer as needed following substantial storm events. LEARN MORE
In the fall the City provides for loose leaf pickup. Leaf pickup normally starts in the third week of October and continues through the end of November. A notice is placed in the local papers several times prior to and during the leaf pickup. LEARN MORE
The City’s compost site is located on the south side of Fawn River Road between S. Lakeview Avenue and S. Nottawa Street. The site is free of charge to City residents and accepts leaves, grass clippings and brush during regularly scheduled hours April through November. The site is also open on the first two (2) Saturdays in January to accept Christmas trees. COMPOST SITE SCHEDULE AND FEES
DPS is responsible for maintaining the water and sanitary sewer main lines in the street, as well as storm sewer catch basins. Property owners are responsible for maintaining the water and sewer laterals (service line) from the main line in the street to the house.
If you (property owner or occupant) suspect that you may be having sewer trouble or are having an issue with your water service, please contact the DPW immediately at the phone numbers listed above. In the case of sewer issues, DPS staff will check the main line sewer to determine if it is plugged. If the main line sewer is plugged, it will be cleaned. If the main line sewer is not plugged, you will be advised the problem is in your service line and that you should have the service line cleaned.
For non-emergency issues, please go to the City’s Action Line page and select the nature of the issue you wish to report.
