The City of Sturgis takes a comprehensive approach to economic development, involving not only several members of City staff through the Business Development Team, but also multiple organizations throughout the community.
Internal to the City, the Assistant City Manager also serves as the Development Director, an in-house point of contact for economic development. He serves as the liaison to the Sturgis Economic Development Corporation, Sturgis Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, Sturgis Improvement Association, and Generate Sturgis.
The City also utilizes the services of Southwest Michigan First for Manufacturing Specialist services. The assigned staff member works with local industries, handling site visits, attraction, and retention issues for this sector in conjunction with other City staff.
Sturgis Economic Development Corporation
The Sturgis EDC is a nine member board which is tasked with promoting development in the Sturgis area.
Sturgis Brownfield Redevelopment Authority
The Sturgis BRA is a nine member board which oversees the City’s efforts to redevelop brownfield properties. This includes the establishment of brownfield plans and the use of Tax Increment Financing (TIF).
Sturgis Downtown Development Authority
The DDA provides oversight and support to downtown businesses and residents. This includes promotional events, façade grants, and development of downtown infrastructure. Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce – The Chamber of Commerce provides information and a variety of services to its member businesses as well as the Community at large.

Downtown Sturgis Association (DSA) – An association of downtown businesses, the DSA works to promote the downtown through marketing and activities, including seasonal events and a summer Farmer’s Market.

Generate Sturgis – Generate Sturgis is a collaboration of various local government and business representatives working to develop an entrepreneurial culture within the Sturgis Area. It provides programs and support targeted at entrepreneurs and the promotion of businesses in Sturgis.
Sturgis Improvement Association (SIA) – A non-profit organization focused on business and community development, the SIA works to build effective partnerships among business, education, foundations and the public sector, pursues new opportunities for growth and development, and takes an active role in activities designed to develop the area’s human, technical and capital resources.
Southwest Michigan First - Southwest Michigan First is an organization of privately funded economic development advisors who act as the catalyst for economic success in Southwest Michigan. Southwest Michigan First works closely with St. Joseph County and the City of Sturgis in providing economic development resources in the area.
