Meter Divison Supervisor

The Supervisor directs the activities of the meter division, including the supervision, training, and scheduling of assigned staff. The Meter Division Supervisor will report directly to the Electric Department Operations Manager. The City of Sturgis provides electric, water, and wastewater (sewer) services to customers within the City and surrounding area. The City of Sturgis Electric, Water, and Wastewater Departments all strive to provide customers with high-quality utilities, excellent customer service, and competitive rates. The Meter Division Supervisor oversees and participates in the installation, maintenance, testing and repair of the utility’s 7,200 electric and 4,000 water meters. The City recently installed an Eaton Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system, Yukon Advanced Energy Services Platform.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES • Plans and coordinates the day-to-day activities of the Meter Division. • Prepares staff schedules and assignments, prioritizes projects, provides training, and supervises work progress and quality for compliance to standards and safety practices. • Oversees the installation, maintenance and repair of electric and water meters. • Coordinates meter reading with Customer Service, service work, testing activities, organizes and prepares meter installations with the Operations Manager, and coordinates utility shut-offs with Customer Service. • Tracks department projects and activities, collects data, prepares correspondence, prepares general reports and completes related administrative activities for the division. Handles large accounts to ensure billing accuracy. • Responds to customer inquiries and complaints regarding usage, investigates reports of unauthorized use of electricity and improves locations with little to no access for department staff. • Maintains an automated meter records system showing the meter location, type, number, test information and history. • General oversight of the Yukon meter reading system including Network Manager, MyMeter, meter programming, creating reports and related functions. • Participates in Division operations as needed. • Works with the Inventory Controller to maintain related inventory. • Maintains safety practices and procedures. Ensures employees follow appropriate safety protocols. • Reviews and approves compiled employee timesheets and work reports. • Participates in ongoing training and professional development, including safety training. • Responds to emergencies at all hours as needed. Assists other departments with routine and emergency tasks as required by operational demands. • Performs related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS The minimum qualifications for this position are a high school diploma or equivalent, with technical and vocational training in electric and water meter maintenance and repair, and a minimum of four (4) years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of various electric and water meters. Supervisory and administrative experience is strongly preferred. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS • A valid Michigan driver’s license, a satisfactory driving record, while employed by the City of Sturgis. • Successful completion of additional training, including required certifications (CPR and First Aid). • State of Michigan Class C Operator certificate for underground storage tanks. • Substantial knowledge of the best practices, procedures, materials and tools associated with electrical and water meter systems. • Knowledge of the equipment, components and safety procedures associated with electrical and water meter systems. • Skill in the use of City vehicles, equipment, tools and materials. • Skill in the use of standard office equipment, computers and related spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software. • Skill in effectively communicating ideas and concepts orally and in writing, and in making presentations in public forums. • Ability to effectively motivate, coordinate and manage staff to maximize their potential, productivity and effectiveness, and promote a constructive work environment. • Ability to follow and train others on proper methods, procedures, and safety precautions. • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions. • Ability to work constructively and interact professionally with City employees, elected officials, the general public, contractors, and other professional contacts. • Ability to work under varying weather conditions, in emergency situations, and sometimes outside of regular working hours.
