ADMINISTRATION AND COMMAND
The Sturgis Police Department is under the command of Public Safety Director Geoff Smith and Deputy Chief Dave Ives. The department consists of 19 sworn officers and five support staff. Five Sergeants supervise four platoons and a Detective Bureau. In addition, the department has a Reserve Division and VIP's (volunteers in police service) to assist.

CLERKS AND EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
The department employs two full-time clerks, one record clerk and an executive secretary. Our clerks perform a variety of clerical support duties and activities. Their duties include: answering phones, serve as receptionists, type reports, enter information into the computer, issue firearm purchase permits and many other duties. Our record clerk is responsible for maintaining various records, compiling associated reports, scheduling overtime and many other duties. The executive secretary provides administrative assistance to the Director and Deputy Chiefs for both the police and fire departments.

ROAD PATROL
17 officers provide 24 hour service on four platoons. Day platoons consist of one clerk and three officers. Night platoons consist of four officers. Each platoon works 12 hour shifts. In addition to regular patrol duties officers often participate in a variety of traffic enforcement grants for seat belt, alcohol and other traffic enforcement. Many officers often serve in specialized areas as required, to include K-9, Crime Scene, Crash and Arson Investigators, Special Response Tactical Unit, Field Training Officers, Bike Patrol, Drug Unit, and Youth Services.

DETECTIVE BUREAU
The Detective Bureau is under the supervision of a Detective Sergeant. He oversees an officer assigned as the School Resource Officer and an officer assigned as an undercover drug unit officer. The Detective Sergeant works major cases and also conducts follow-up on felony cases as requested by patrol officers and supervises the evidence room.

NARCOTICS OFFICER
One full time officer is assigned to the county-wide drug enforcement team known as the S.C.A.N. Unit (St. Joseph Area Narcotics).

CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER
One civilian employee splits full time duties as an animal control officer for the police department and a code enforcement officer through the community development department. His duties include animal control, parking violations, abandoned vehicles, housing code violations and maintaining portable radar signs throughout the city.
